The Assistive Technology Teacher is primarily responsibile to the Principal of the Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS) for providing specialized instruction, consultation, and support in assistive technology for students with visual impairments.  This position focuses on equipping students with the technology skill, tools, and strategies necessary to access the curriculum, develop independence, and prepare for post-secondary education, employment, and independent live.  The Assistive Technology Teacher collalborates with the instructional staff, related service providers families and external agencies to ensure appropriate selection, implementation, and effective use of assistive technology aligned with students' individualized needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

*Follow all School Board and GMS Policies and procedures.

*Provide direct instruction to students in the use of assistive technology to support access to the curriculum and daily tasks

*Provide Direct instruction to students in the use of word processing, slide presentation, spreadsheets,a nd other productivity apps.

*Conduct assistive technology assessment and contribute recommendations to IEPs and instructional planning

*Train students in the use of screen readers, braille technology, magnification devices, accessible software, and emerging technologies.

*Collaborate with classroom teachers to integrate assistive technolgoy into instruction and classroom routines.

*Provide consultation , coaching and technical support to staff regarding accessibility and assistive technology implementation.

*Support students in developing independence, self-advocacy, and problem-solving skills related to technology use.

* Maintain accurate records related to assessments, services, equipment use, and student progress.

*Assess with selection, setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of assistive technology devices and software

*Coordinate with families, vendors, and outside agencies regarding assistive technolgy needs and services.

*Participate in IEP meetings, staff meetings, prefessional development, and school-based committess as required.

*Stay current with emerging assistive technologies and best practices in the field of visual impairment.

*Adhere to district policies, procedures and the North Carolina Code of ethics for Educators.

* Support and uphold the mission, vision, and values of the Governor Morehead School for the Blind

*Other duties as assigned by the administration

Minimal

Must hold or be eligible  for a North Carolina Professional educator's License in Visual Impairment (K-12) or Special Education , with expertise in assitstive technology.

Preferred

*Possess a valid North Carolina Professional Educator's License in Visual Impairment (K-12)

*Formal training or certification in Assistive Technology

*Experience working in a school sertting serving students who are blind or visually impaired

*Experience collaborating on IEP teams and conductin assistive technology  assessments.

About Governor Morehead School for the Blind

The Governor Morehead School for the Blind was established in 1845 by an act of the North Carolina Legislature. Our campus is located in Raleigh, North Carolina, a growing and progressive city. Governor Morehead School considers enrollment to our school for students who are blind or visually impaired according to North Carolina Vision Impaired Guidelines. This includes students whose needs can be met at GMS who have additional disabilities. Governor Morehead School offers education services for students with visual impairments in grades K-12 and ages 5-21. We are a public school and follow the state Curriculum standards. In addition to this we also teacher the Expanded Core Curriculum to all of our students based on their assessed needs.
